Movie executives behind Denzel Washington's new movie Book of Eli had reservations about casting the Oscar winner in the lead role -- because they feared the African-American star was not bankable enough across the globe.
Filmmaker Allen Hughes and his brother Albert direct Washington in the post-apocalyptic action film, but Allen reveals they had to fight to have the Training Day star cast as Eli.
He tells the New York Post, "I'm not gonna front -- Denzel's black. His numbers are great, but internationally, does black travel? That's what really was going on. (The studio) was crunching the numbers."
The movie, which also stars Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis, opens on Friday.

Winona Ryder, Vincent Cassel and Barbara Hershey have joined the already formidable cast of Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming drama Black Swan.
Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis were already signed up for Swan, which centers on rival New York City ballerinas -- don’t worry, though, there’s a supernatural theme; it’s not a ballet movie!
Reports began circulating in August that the two female leads will engage in a rather graphic sex scene -- so there’s that, too!
And, of course, Aronofsky, coming off of last year’s Oscar-nominated The Wrestler (and boasting a resume that includes Requiem for a Dream), is bound to keep things interesting.
